I-95 Fog Detection System, Glynn County, GA

In the first part of this two-part project, GCA determined the feasibility of a system to detect and issue warnings of fog that would impair the visibility of motorists on a segment of I-95 near Brunswick, Georgia.  Then GCA designed and prepared construction plans for the installation of the system.

The system consisted of fog sensors, speed sensors, variable message signs, weather stations and cameras. Functional specifications were developed for the system software. Visibility thresholds were defined along with warning messages relating to visibility and advisory speed.  Specifications were developed for the fog sensors and speed sensors.  GDOT specifications were used for the cameras, signs and communications equipment.
